DIY Mould Cleaning vs Professional Help: When Should You Call Someone?

Mould is common in Lismore and across the Northern Rivers. Our warm, humid climate, heavy rainfall and condensation-prone homes can create ideal conditions for mould growth. If you've discovered mould in your bathroom, bedroom, laundry or on a ceiling, the first question is often: Can I clean this myself, or do I need professional help?
For a small, accessible patch of surface mould, DIY cleaning may be perfectly reasonable. But recurring mould, larger areas, hidden moisture or mould associated with water damage can be signs that more than a straightforward clean is needed.
Here's a practical way to decide.
When DIY mould cleaning may be reasonable
For a small, accessible area of visible surface mould, cleaning it yourself can often be a reasonable first step. That might include:
a small patch around a bathroom window
light mould on a windowsill
a limited area on a bathroom wall or ceiling
minor surface mould associated with condensation
mould on an easily cleaned, non-porous surface

The important distinction is that you're dealing with an obvious and limited surface problem, rather than mould that may extend into building materials or be associated with a significant moisture issue.
If you tackle mould yourself, avoid aggressively dry-brushing or unnecessarily disturbing it. Use appropriate personal protection, follow the safety directions for the cleaning product you're using, and ventilate the area where appropriate.
I would also refer you to our related business, Nana's Remedy Co., which specialises in naturally-minded mould-treatment products for DIY'ers wanting a less toxic approach. You can check out their vinegar & essential oils-based anti-mould solution here.
When should you consider getting help?
Professional help becomes more worthwhile when the mould is difficult to deal with safely, the affected area is becoming substantial, or you're uncertain about what's causing it. Some warning signs include:
The mould keeps returning. You've cleaned it several times, but it comes back in the same place.
There's more mould than you're comfortable tackling yourself. Cleaning a small windowsill is very different from dealing with a mould-covered wall.
It's difficult to reach. High ceilings and awkward areas introduce risks beyond the mould itself.
You're unsure whether it's only on the surface. Visible mould can sometimes be associated with moisture within or behind building materials.
There's an ongoing leak or dampness. The source of the moisture may need to be addressed before cleaning will achieve much.
The mould followed flooding or significant water damage. This can be a very different situation from ordinary household surface mould and may require specialist assessment or remediation.

And sometimes you simply don't want to clean mould yourself. That's a perfectly reasonable reason to call someone too. In many cases, I will be able to help you out.
My focus is on visible surface mould cleaning in homes around Lismore and the surrounding Northern Rivers.
Typical jobs include visible surface mould in bathrooms, bedrooms, laundries, ceilings, windows and window surrounds.
My approach combines thorough physical cleaning with a preference for naturally derived and lower-toxicity treatment options where practical and appropriate. This includes products based on vinegar and clove oil. I don't believe that harsher automatically means better. My aim is to use the least harsh practical approach for the job, while still taking the cleaning seriously.
Natural doesn't automatically mean harmless, however, so treatments still need to be used responsibly and with appropriate safety precautions.
If what I see suggests significant water damage, hidden or cavity mould, structural moisture problems, widespread contamination or a situation requiring specialist remediation, I'll tell you. In this case the appropriate next step might instead involve a builder, plumber, roofer, building inspector or specialist mould remediator. I'd rather be clear about the limits of our service than sell someone a clean that isn't appropriate for the problem.
Summary
So, if the mould is small, accessible and genuinely looks like a straightforward surface problem, you may decide professional cleaning isn't necessary. In that case, check out Nana's Anti-Mould Solution, for a less-toxic, more family friendly, (and better-smelling) mould cleaner.
For anything else, get in touch with me - I will generally tackle the job myself, but if required, I will refer you to the appropriate resource.

It helps if you tell us roughly how large the affected area is, whether you've cleaned it before, and whether you know of any leaks, condensation or moisture problems.
I'll have a look and let you know whether it appears to be the sort of visible surface mould cleaning Mould Medic handles. If it looks outside our scope, we'll tell you that too.
